Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Spray a casserole dish with cooking spray. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Place diced tomatoes in a colander over a bowl. Let drain, reserving the juice to adjust the sauce consistency later. (5 minutes)

03

Step

Meanwhile, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook and stir ground beef in the hot skillet until browned and crumbly, about 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl. Drain and discard most of the grease from the skillet. (10 minutes)

04

Step

Cook onions in the remaining grease over medium-low heat until softened and beginning to caramelize, about 15 minutes. Remove from the heat and add to the bowl with the beef, drained tomatoes, and condensed tomato soup. Add reserved tomato juice as needed to reach a slightly saucy consistency. (20 minutes)

05

Step

Place the sliced cabbage in the prepared casserole dish, mounding it slightly in the center. Pour the ground beef mixture evenly over the cabbage, ensuring it's well distributed. Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil. (5 minutes)

06

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for 1 more hour, or until the cabbage is very tender and the casserole is bubbly. (120 minutes)

07

Step

Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 20 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and the casserole to set slightly. Serve hot. (20 minutes)

For a richer flavor, use a combination of ground beef and ground pork.
Add a teaspoon of smoked paprika to the beef mixture for a smoky depth.
If you like a touch of heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the onion while cooking, or serve with your favorite hot sauce.
Ensure the cabbage is thinly sliced for optimal tenderness after baking.

I found it a little too sweet for my taste, so I added a splash of apple cider vinegar to balance it out.

Make sure you really drain the ground beef. Otherwise, it can get a little greasy.
