Follow The Directions

01

Step

Brown the Butter: In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt 3/4 cup unsalted butter. Continue cooking until it turns a light brown color and emits a nutty aroma, approximately 12-15 minutes. Watch closely to prevent burning. Transfer the browned butter to a bowl and freeze until solid, about 30 minutes.

02

Step

Prepare the Apple Filling: Meanwhile, melt 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter in the same skillet. Add the chopped apples, 2 tablespoons of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, lemon juice, nutmeg, and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender, golden brown, and caramelized, approximately 15 minutes. Remove from heat and toss with the remaining 3 tablespoons of brown sugar.

03

Step

Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a 9-inch square baking pan with parchment paper, ensuring an overhang on all sides for easy removal.

04

Step

Make the Crumble Dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, oats, 2/3 cup of brown sugar, baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Grate the frozen browned butter coarsely or chop it into small pieces. Cut the butter into the flour mixture using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles a coarse meal. Add the egg yolk and vanilla extract; stir with a fork just until a crumbly dough forms. Press about two-thirds of the dough (approximately 2 2/3 cups) into an even layer in the prepared baking pan.

05

Step

Pre-Bake the Crust: Bake the crust until it is lightly browned, about 10 minutes.

06

Step

Assemble and Bake: Spread the apple mixture evenly over the pre-baked crust. Crumble the remaining dough evenly over the top of the apple filling. Bake until the topping is golden brown and the filling is bubbly, about 25 minutes.

07

Step

Cool and Serve: Let the bars cool completely on a wire rack. Using the parchment paper overhang, lift the bars out of the pan and transfer them to a cutting board. Cut into squares and serve.

For best results, use a mix of tart and sweet apple varieties for a more complex flavor profile.
Be careful not to over-bake the crust, as it can become dry.
Feel free to add a handful of chopped nuts (such as pecans or walnuts) to the crumble topping for extra crunch.
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra special treat.
