For a richer flavor, use brown butter instead of softened butter. If you don't have walnuts, pecans or almonds work well as a substitute. To prevent the top from browning too quickly, tent the loaf with foil during the last 20 minutes of baking. This bread is even better the next day, after the flavors have had a chance to meld.
