For a richer flavor, use bone-in Italian sausage and remove the bones after cooking. If you don't have time for a long simmer, you can reduce the cooking time to 2 hours, but the flavors will not be as developed. This soup is even better the next day, as the flavors have more time to meld. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
