Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). (5 minutes)

02

Step

In a large bowl, cut the cold vegetable shortening into 2 cups of self-rising flour using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. (10 minutes)

03

Step

Gradually add the cold water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough just comes together. Be careful not to overmix. (5 minutes)

04

Step

Divide the dough in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll one portion of the dough into a 9-inch square, approximately 1/4-inch thick. (10 minutes)

05

Step

Carefully transfer the rolled dough into a 9x9-inch baking dish, pressing it gently into the bottom. (2 minutes)

06

Step

In the same bowl, combine the canned blackberries (with their syrup), 3/4 cup of sugar, and 1/3 cup of self-rising flour. Mix gently until the sugar is dissolved. (5 minutes)

07

Step

Pour the blackberry mixture evenly over the prepared crust in the baking dish. (2 minutes)

08

Step

Roll out the remaining dough into another 9-inch square. Cut the dough into strips using a knife or pizza cutter. (10 minutes)

09

Step

Arrange the strips of dough over the blackberry filling in a lattice pattern. (5 minutes)

10

Step

Dot the top of the lattice crust with thin slices of butter, then sprinkle evenly with 1/4 cup of sugar. (3 minutes)

11

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 40 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the blackberry filling is bubbling. (40 minutes)

12

Step

Let cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired. (10 minutes)

For a richer flavor, substitute half of the vegetable shortening with cold butter.
If fresh blackberries are in season, use 4 cups of fresh berries instead of canned. Reduce the sugar by 1/4 cup if using fresh berries.
A sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg in the blackberry filling adds warmth and complexity.
Feel free to experiment with different crust designs. You can cut out shapes with cookie cutters or create a solid top crust with vents cut in it.
