Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Spread walnuts onto a baking sheet. (Prep time: 2 minutes)

02

Step

Toast walnuts in the preheated oven until golden brown and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Watch carefully to prevent burning. Set aside to cool to room temperature. (Cook time: 5 minutes)

03

Step

Increase oven temperature to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). (Prep time: 1 minute)

04

Step

In a small bowl, combine 3 tablespoons flour, 3 tablespoons brown sugar, and 1/2 cup cooled walnuts. Cut in 2 tablespoons cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

05

Step

In a large bowl, whisk together 2 cups flour, 2 tablespoons brown sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in 1/2 cup cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine crumbs. Stir in the remaining 1/2 cup walnuts. (Prep time: 10 minutes)

06

Step

In a small bowl, whisk together 1/3 cup maple syrup and egg. Add to the flour mixture and stir until just combined. Gradually add milk, just enough for the dough to come together and leave the sides of the bowl. (Prep time: 5 minutes)

07

Step

Place dough on a lightly floured surface. Gently roll in flour to coat, then knead lightly about 10 times. Pat into an 8-inch circle on an ungreased baking sheet. Brush the top with milk and sprinkle evenly with the walnut topping. Score the dough circle into 8 wedges with a sharp knife, being careful not to cut all the way through. (Prep time: 10 minutes)

08

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 15 minutes. Remove immediately from the baking sheet and carefully separate the scones. Serve warm with freshly whipped cream and a generous drizzle of maple syrup. (Cook time: 15 minutes)

For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dry ingredients.
If you don't have walnuts, pecans or almonds would also work well.
Be careful not to overmix the dough, as this can result in tough scones.
The scones are best served warm, ideally within a few hours of baking. However, they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
