For a richer flavor, use salted butter and omit 1/4 teaspoon of salt from the dry ingredients. If you don't have a pastry blender, you can use two knives or your fingertips to cut in the butter. To prevent the dates from sticking to the saucepan, stir frequently while cooking. For easier cutting, chill the baked squares in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes before slicing.
