Follow The Directions

01

Step
8 hrs

Soak the Beans: In a large pot, submerge the navy beans in ample water. Cover and let soak for at least 8 hours, or ideally overnight. (8+ hours)

02

Step
1 hrs

Cook the Beans: Drain the soaked beans and return them to the pot. Cover with fresh water and simmer over medium heat until the beans are tender but not mushy. Reserve 1 cup of the cooking liquid. (Approximately 1 hour)

03

Step
10 mins

Combine Ingredients: In a slow cooker, combine the cooked beans, ketchup, diced ham, 1 1/2 cups of water, brown sugar, molasses, onion powder, dry mustard, salt, Worcestershire sauce, and black pepper. Add 1 cup of the reserved bean liquid. (5 minutes)

04

Step
7 hrs

Slow Cook: Cover and cook on Low setting for 7 to 9 hours, or until the beans have reached your desired level of tenderness and the sauce has thickened. If the beans appear dry during cooking, add more of the reserved bean liquid or water as needed. (7-9 hours)

For a deeper smoky flavor, consider adding a few strips of bacon to the slow cooker. Remember to pre-cook the bacon slightly.
Adjust the sweetness to your liking by adding more or less brown sugar or molasses.
The cooking time may vary depending on your slow cooker. Check the beans periodically and adjust accordingly.
