Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat an oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Butter a 9x13-inch baking dish. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Place the blackberries in a mixing bowl, and sprinkle with lemon juice. Toss with 1 cup sugar and cornstarch until evenly coated. Place into the prepared baking dish, and arrange the cubes of butter on top. (10 minutes)

03

Step

In a large bowl, whisk the flour, 1/4 cup sugar, cinnamon, salt, baking powder, and baking soda together. Cut in 1 cup of chilled, diced butter using a pastry cutter until the butter is in pieces no larger than a pea. (15 minutes)

04

Step

Stir in the buttermilk until a batter has formed. Spoon the batter evenly over the blackberries. Brush the top of the batter with additional buttermilk to moisten, then sprinkle with the remaining 1/4 cup of sugar. (5 minutes)

05

Step

Bake in the preheated oven until the fruit is tender, and the biscuit top is golden, about 25 minutes. (25 minutes)

For a richer flavor, use brown sugar instead of white sugar in the biscuit topping.
If you don't have buttermilk, you can make a substitute by adding 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar to a cup of milk. Let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

I've made this recipe several times, and it's always a winner. I sometimes add a splash of bourbon to the blackberries for an extra kick!
