Follow The Directions

01

Step
5 mins

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). (5 minutes)

02

Step
30 mins

Place turnips into a large pot and cover with salted water; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer until tender, about 20 minutes. Drain turnips thoroughly and return them to the pot. Mash turnips until smooth; stir in 2 tablespoons of butter and the beaten eggs. (30 minutes)

03

Step
10 mins

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, baking powder, salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Add this dry mixture to the mashed turnip mixture and stir until just combined. Transfer the mixture to a greased 8x8 inch baking dish. (10 minutes)

04

Step
5 mins

In a small bowl, combine the bread crumbs and melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the turnip casserole. (5 minutes)

05

Step
30 mins

Bake in the preheated oven until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is heated through, about 25 minutes. Let stand for 5-10 minutes before serving. (30 minutes)

For an extra layer of flavor, try browning the butter before adding it to the mashed turnips.
The casserole can be assembled a day ahead of time. Cover and refrigerate until ready to bake. Add about 10 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
Feel free to experiment with different types of bread crumbs. Panko bread crumbs will give a crispier topping.
