Follow The Directions

01

Step
20 mins

**Prepare the Crust (20 minutes):** In a large bowl, cut the shortening into 1 cup of flour and salt using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually sprinkle in cold water, one tablespoon at a time, tossing with a fork until the dough just comes together. Add 1-2 teaspoons more water if needed.

02

Step
15 mins

**Shape and Roll the Crust (15 minutes):** Gather the dough into a ball. On a lightly floured surface, shape it into a flattened round. Roll the dough into a circle that is 2 inches larger than your 9-inch pie plate. Fold the pastry into quarters and place it in the pie plate. Unfold and gently press it into the bottom and sides of the plate. Trim the edge of the pastry 1 inch from the rim. Fold the excess pastry under and crimp or flute the edges to create a decorative border.

03

Step
5 mins

**Preheat the Oven (5 minutes):** Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).

04

Step
10 mins

**Make the Filling (10 minutes):** In a large bowl, beat the eggs until foamy. Add the 1/2 cup of flour, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Beat until well-blended. Blend in the melted and cooled butter. Stir in the chocolate chips and chopped walnuts.

05

Step
1 hrs 10 mins

**Assemble and Bake (1 hour 10 minutes):** Pour the filling into the prepared pie crust. Bake at 325 degrees F (165 degrees C) for approximately 1 hour, or until the filling is set. A slight jiggle in the center is okay.

06

Step
30 mins

**Cool and Serve (30 minutes):** Let the pie cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

For an extra nutty flavor, toast the walnuts lightly before adding them to the filling.
If the crust edges start to brown too quickly, cover them with foil or a pie shield during the last 20 minutes of baking.
Feel free to substitute other nuts, such as pecans or macadamia nuts, for the walnuts.
For a deeper chocolate flavor, use dark chocolate chips or chunks instead of semisweet chocolate chips.
